Araya Totoan
Kaga / Ishikawa
BLJ Tips & Insights
Located in Yamashiro Onsen, one of four hot-spring towns in the foothills of Mt Hakusan in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture, Araya Totoan is a luxurious ryokan that offers guests an immersive experience of Old Japan.
It’s an invitation to slow down and connect with the essence of Japanese culture and hospitality. Elegant guest rooms are designed in the traditional sukiya style, with tatami-laid floors and shoji screen windows that open to soothing garden views. Draping crowns of small-leaf maple go from a vibrant green in spring and summer, to a dazzling burst of fiery hues in autumn. Come winter, the views turn tranquil as snow covers the landscape. Araya Totoan has three communal baths, each one distinct in look and feel, as well as guest rooms with private open-air baths made entirely of fragrant hinoki wood. All baths are fed with superior mineral-rich thermal waters straight from the hot spring source. Guest rooms with private baths also come with alfresco terraces that inspire quiet contemplation.
The town itself, first discovered over a thousand years ago, features historic buildings of traditional architecture and spectacular nature views, perfect for rejuvenating walks.
