Shinsho-an

Kyoto / Kyoto

BLJ Tips & Insights
The singularly exquisite Shinsho-an, a new luxury hotel in Kyoto’s Okazaki area, displays the same elegant and muted façade as the rest of the affluent neighborhood of beautiful private homes. But beyond the discreet grey stone and natural wood exterior, Shinsho-an offers a divinely plush cocoon from the bustle of the city, and a retreat into a rarefied world steeped in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The hotel is the result of a collaboration among some of Japan’s finest talents, including Kyoto-based architect Toshihito Yokouchi and Nakamura Sotoji Komuten, an engineering firm renowned for its mastery of sukiya architecture. Shinsho-an was built by skilled Kyoto artisans using rare and highly prized materials sourced from all over Japan, so rare the supply was adequate for only four suites. Every room — made fragrant by Japanese Kitayama cedar, Kouya hinoki and red pine — is unique, designed and finished to create a paradoxically opulent and esoteric hideaway. To preserve the integrity of the materials according to the hotel’s philosophy of authenticity, Shinsho-an takes a novel approach to hospitality and extends exclusive stays only to guests who have been personally introduced to the hotel friends and affiliates. The hotel also provides the perfect backdrop for Ogata, chef Toshiro Ogata’s second eponymous restaurant set in the ground floor, where divine interpretations of quintessential Kyoto cuisine is served: seasonal ingredients, masterful techniques, subtle yet sublime flavors. With a devoted following, and many curious gourmands from around the world eager for a taste, a seat at Ogata’s table is one of the most difficult to book in the city.
