Situated in Gunma’s prefectural capital, SHIROIYA HOTEL represents a transformative landmark in Japanese boutique hospitality, reinventing a 300-year-old inn into an internationally acclaimed art hotel. Masterminded by architect Sou Fujimoto, the property comprises two distinct structures: the Heritage Tower, a dramatic renovation where the original 1970s concrete frame was exposed to create a four-story light-filled atrium, and the Green Tower, a grassy, hill-like new build designed to mirror the natural riverbanks of the Tone River. The property functions as a living museum, exhibiting site-specific commissions by major contemporary artists including Lawrence Weiner, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Leandro Erlich, whose iconic three dimensional "Lighting Pipes" traverse the main atrium. A handful of special guest rooms were individually designed by international design legends such as Jasper Morrison, Michele De Lucchi, and Fujimoto himself. Adding to this artistic pedigree, the hotel features residence suites styled under the creative direction of textile designer Akira Minagawa’s brand, minä perhonen, complemented by the minä perhonen ovi boutique in the hotel grounds. Guests can also pop into the Blue Bottle Coffee Shiroiya Cafe tucked within a cave like nook of the Green Tower, designed by Keiji Ashizawa using regional brickwork and custom Karimoku furniture. The hotel’s flagship restaurant, SHIROIYA the RESTAURANT, is supervised by Chef Hiroyasu Kawate of Tokyo’s two-Michelin-starred Florilège and led by Executive Chef Hiro Saku, serving elevated local gastronomy that celebrates Gunma’s agricultural bounty. Guests can also enjoy an artisan bakery, a subterranean Finnish sauna, and a private cocktail bar hidden within the green hill. Serving as a core venue and official hotel partner for the inaugural Maebashi Biennale launching September 2026 under the city-wide theme "Mebuku”.
