Accommodation
SHIROIYA HOTEL
BLJ Tips & Insights
Once a historic ryokan in Maebashi with over 300 years of tradition, the property has been reborn as Shiroiya Hotel—a striking and innovative space where heritage and contemporary design come together. Centered around a bold exposed-concrete atrium illuminated by a light installation from a world-renowned artist, the hotel has been carefully reimagined, with each guest room offering a distinctive concept and atmosphere.
The hotel’s innovative restaurant, listed in the Gault & Millau guide for four consecutive years, presents refined cuisine inspired by French gastronomy and the rich flavors of Gunma. Led by Gunma-born Chef Hiro Katayama, who has trained at top establishments in Japan and abroad, the restaurant showcases seasonal ingredients with exceptional craftsmanship. A patisserie, bakery, bar, and three fully private saunas further enhance the experience, ensuring a restorative and inspiring stay.
The hotel features 28 uniquely designed guest rooms created by leading global creators, including a special room designed by renowned architect Sou Fujimoto. Staying here feels like residing in a private gallery, offering guests a truly immersive artistic experience. In addition, a hidden speakeasy-style bar designed by acclaimed artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida provides an intimate and refined atmosphere.
Tucked away in a quiet alley, the tea room “Shungetsu,” once cherished by the last proprietress of the former Shiroiya, has been carefully relocated to preserve its historic character. Under expert guidance, guests can learn the traditions of the Japanese tea ceremony, enjoy matcha and seasonal sweets, and participate in hands-on tea-making experiences suitable even for beginners.
Surrounded by lush greenery and contemporary artworks, the hotel offers an experience akin to strolling through a living museum. Guests may also join nearby art tours led by hotel staff, providing deeper insight into the cultural and artistic heritage of Maebashi.
Beyond the hotel, the surrounding Gunma region invites exploration through a variety of unforgettable outdoor adventures. Ride eco-friendly e-bikes through Oze to ascend 800 meters and reach the breathtaking Ayame-daira plateau in a fraction of the usual time. Hike Mt. Tanigawa, a UNESCO Eco Park, with an experienced guide and enjoy hand-drip coffee brewed from pristine spring water. Or glide across the cobalt-blue waters of Shima Lake by canoe, taking in serene landscapes that change beautifully with the seasons.
Every experience at Shiroiya Hotel is thoughtfully designed to connect guests with architecture, art, nature, cuisine, and culture—revealing the timeless spirit of the region.
